sweet potato:
Some considerations when choosing and preparing roasted sweet potatoes:
- type – Garnet or gem varieties with red skin and orange flesh are best for baking, you can find them in most grocery stores. You can also substitute yam, which is similar to sweet potatoes but less sweet.
- skin – Whether you want to peel or keep the skin is up to you. Remember, skin is rich in nutrients, including potassium, calcium, vitamin C, and fiber.
- chopped – I cut the potatoes into 1 inch pieces, but you can make sweet potato wedges if you want.
seasoning:
- olive oil – Helps potatoes retain their seasoning, keeps them from sticking to the pan, and allows them to caramelize. You can substitute any neutral oil you like.
- brown sugar – If you like something sweeter, this is optional.I usually avoid refined sugar so I use Besti Brown Monk Fruit Allulose Blend Conversely, but you can also omit it entirely. You can also substitute honey or maple syrup if you prefer.
- garlic – Chop fresh garlic cloves for best flavor. If you are in a hurry, you can use canned minced garlic Instead, or a teaspoon of garlic powder.
- Cinnamon – Adds sweet and woody flavor to sweet potato wedges with a slight citrus flavor. For a deeper flavor, try swapping it with homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Or savory spices like cumin and paprika.
- sea salt -I recommend sea salt over kosher salt for a better taste, but both work. Salt also helps them crisp up.
- Black pepper
Optional toppings:
- butter – Gives potatoes a richer flavor and adds a little moisture to them after baking.
- fresh herbs – Parsley or thyme add a fresh flavor and aroma to the finished dish.
Variation: Make it spicy!
Swap the cinnamon with paprika or chili powder.

What is the temperature for roasting sweet potatoes?
The higher the temperature, the sweeter the potatoes. For sweeter potatoes, 425 degrees F is the ideal temperature. However, if you want less sweet fork-tender, crispy, roasted sweet potatoes, 400 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature to use.
Tips for the Best Baked Sweet Potatoes
If you want to make it the best oven-roasted sweet potato recipe, follow these tried and true tips:
- Cut the potato wedges into the same size. This ensures that the cubes cook at the same rate.
- Soak potato cubes if time permits. This step is not required, but it will remove excess starch and give the potato cubes a crispy skin. To do this, soak the cut potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes before cooking or overnight. Pat them dry before adding oil and seasoning.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan. As long as you stir halfway through, two layers in a 9×13 baking pan will do. You can also use a baking sheet instead, which will brown the potatoes, in which case stirring is less important if the potatoes are in a single layer.
- Do not use parchment paper. This isn’t necessary for a baking sheet anyway, but even with a pan, don’t line or use foil and grease. Parchment paper will inhibit browning and caramelization.
- Position the grill correctly. Center the rack in the oven to distribute the heat evenly.
- Double or triple the recipe? Use multiple baking sheets so the potatoes cook evenly and become slightly crispy.

Storage Instructions
- Shop: Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Meal preparation: Chop the potato wedges and submerge them in a bowl of water in the refrigerator. This prevents browning and also helps crisp the potatoes as they cook. Drain and pat dry before roasting.
- Reheat: Heat this roasted sweet potato recipe in a skillet over high heat, or in a 350-degree Fahrenheit oven to crisp up. Alternatively, you can put them in the microwave, but it won’t be crispy that way.
