i made this Homemade Guacamole recipe About gazillion times and served with dozens mexican recipes. It’s as good as Chipotle’s! (You know I like to copy my favorites from there, like jalapeno pepper.) It’s hard to go wrong with guacamole, but I’ve tweaked this version to make it my own–it’s still probably my best guacamole recipe yet. So, here’s everything you need to know, from the ingredients in guacamole to the easy steps to making it…

Easy Guacamole:

  • avocado – This easy guacamole recipe uses two ripe avocados. If your avocados are still hard and you want to speed up the ripening process, place them in a paper bag with bananas, apples, or kiwis for about 12 hours.
  • lime juice – This guacamole recipe tastes best with lime juice, but you can also substitute lemon juice. The acid will also help it turn brown.
  • sea ​​salt – Use fine sea salt for the best texture.
  • onion – I used diced red onion in this authentic guacamole recipe, but you can also use shallots, chives, or scallions for a different flavor.
  • black pepper – This is a mild recipe for guacamole. If you want a spicy guacamole, just double the amount of jalapenos, or substitute serrano peppers. The seeds are the hottest part of the jalapeño, so omit them for a milder version.
  • fresh cilantro – These are the classic fresh herbs used in authentic guacamole, but if that’s not your thing, parsley or scallions can also be substituted.

In my opinion, the best guacamole recipes are the basic one above, but when you want to mix it up and make guacamole variations, there are a few things you can add:

  • tomato – If you want to stretch your guacamole, add diced seeded Roma tomatoes. It’s a common addition, but there’s a lot of heated debate about whether or not an authentic guacamole recipe should include tomatoes. I usually leave it out. In my opinion, the best guacamole recipes are made without tomatoes…but you did!
  • roasted garlic – add roasted garlic to the guacamole, roasting a head of garlic in the oven Until fragrant, chop a few cloves and add them to your recipes.
  • salsa dancing – Add 1/4 cup of your favorite store-bought salsa or Homemade Salsa.
  • tropical fruit – Add diced pineapple or mango for a sweet contrast.
  • spices – Some people like to add garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder or cumin powder for extra flavor.

How to Make Guacamole

  1. Prepare the avocados. Cut the avocado in half with a sharp knife. Remove the core and scoop out the flesh with a spoon and place in a medium bowl.
  2. Mash avocado, lime juice and salt. Add lime juice and sea salt to the bowl.use one potato masher Or mash with a fork to your desired consistency. (You can also use a mortar and pestle if you prefer.)
  3. Add onion, jalapeño and cilantro. Stir in the red onion, jalapeño and fresh cilantro. Stir to combine.

Guacamole tastes best fresh, but you can store leftovers from the Mexican guacamole recipe if desired. Transfer it to a container, cover the top of the guacamole with plastic wrap (or see below for other more efficient methods), and cover with a lid. Put in the refrigerator.

How long does guacamole last?

Homemade guacamole recipes don’t last long! If stored properly without exposure to air, they will keep for 1-2 days in the refrigerator.

How to keep guacamole from browning?

To keep guacamole from browning, the key is to store it without exposing it to air.

Making it fresh is still your best bet, but if you need to make it ahead, here are some tips for storing it:

  • Use plastic wrap. Store flush with surface in plastic to keep air out. This method is not very efficient as it is not airtight, but it is the easiest.
  • Cover with water or oil. Pour a thin layer of water or oil over the guacamole and cover with plastic. Pour off the water or oil before eating.
  • Use a guacamole container. this container Helps keep guacamole fresh by pushing all the air out of the container. It has great reviews!
  • Add extra lime juice. Add some extra lime juice (on top of what’s already in the recipe) to your dipping sauce. It’s not super effective for a few days, but it can extend its life by a few hours.
  • freeze it. Frozen avocado guacamole works well as long as you don’t let air in – see instructions below.

Can you freeze guacamole?

Yes, you can absolutely freeze guacamole recipes. Frozen guavas will keep for 2-3 months. Thaw and place in the refrigerator overnight.

For best results, follow these freezing tips:

  • Keep things simple. Skip the optional tomatoes and if possible the cilantro and onion as they will lose their texture when thawed. You can always add them later.
  • Puree the guacamole before freezing to minimize browning. I like a chunky guacamole, but the chunks browned everywhere the lime juice hadn’t soaked in.
  • Keep the air circulating. Freezer bags are best, spread the homemade guacamole inside and let the air out before sealing. If you use a container, cover it with plastic wrap that is flush with the surface.
