Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best pork stew ingredients, what each ingredient does in a recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see Recipe card below.
- Boneless Pork Tenderloin Roast – Pork stew recipes also usually use pork shoulder or butt, so these are the best substitutes. Keep in mind that larger, tougher roasts will benefit from more cooking time and become more tender, while lean cuts like pork tenderloin tend to be drier and more chewy. No matter which cut you choose, it will need to be cut into 1-inch pieces.
- olive oil – For roast pork. You can use any heat-resistant oil here, such as avocado oil, if you prefer.
- root vegetables – Include carrots, potatoes and onions.I like to save discards from cutting these Homemade Bone Broth. You can also add other traditional stews like celery. If you want to make this low carb you can substitute kohlrabi for the potatoes like I did Keto Stewor use sweet potatoes for more nutrition.
- garlic – I used freshly crushed garlic, but finely chopped can also be used.
- thyme – Fresh thyme tastes best, but you can substitute 1 tsp dried thyme for the 1 tbsp fresh thyme in the recipe if desired. Other herbs, like fresh parsley or rosemary, also taste great.
- chicken soup – I use the lower sodium variety, but you can use any chicken stock or broth you like.you can also use bone broth for extra richness and nutrition.
- ketchup – This canned tomato product is thinner than ketchup but thicker than canned ketchup. If you can’t find it at the store, you can substitute with equal parts tomato paste and water.
- dry white wine – It is optional but will enhance the natural flavor of the meat.
- Worcestershire sauce – Adds a tangy savory flavor to this stewed pork recipe. Soy sauce (which I don’t usually use) or coconut aminos can be substituted.
- sea salt and black pepper – For seasoning pork stew.
