Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best toppings for slaw, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
Cabbage Salad:
- Coleslaw Mix -Using fresh pre-made coleslaw mix is my go-to time saver for all kinds of slaw recipes! (I also use it when I make Taco Salad and egg rolls in bowl.) You can combine your own shredded green cabbage with shredded carrots if you like, though. You can also use red cabbage, savoy cabbage, or Napa cabbage for a more traditional Asian cabbage salad.
- Bell Pepper – Crunchy and naturally sweet. You can also try carrots, onions, celery, tomatoes or cucumbers.
- onion – Green onions add a delicious, mild onion flavor that pairs perfectly with the other ingredients.
- sunflower seeds – You can also substitute nuts such as walnuts, almonds or pecans.
Asian Salad Dressing:
- coconut aminos – This is a soy sauce substitute. Feel free to use traditional low-sodium soy sauce instead.
- olive oil – You can also use avocado oil or any neutral cooking oil you like.
- white wine vinegar – You can also use rice vinegar, white balsamic vinegar, or apple cider vinegar for a fuller flavor. Lemon juice (bottled or freshly squeezed) works too.
- sesame oil – Adds a nutty flavor and aroma. I prefer toasted sesame oil, but regular is fine too.
- seasoning – I simply season the dressing garlic powdersea salt and crushed red pepper flakes for some heat. A sprinkle of grated ginger (or freshly grated ginger) or a teaspoon of Dijon mustard would also make a nice addition.
Variations: Make the slaw dressing creamy, sweet, or both!
How to Make Slaw

- Make the dressing. In a large bowl, whisk together coconut aminos, olive oil, white wine vinegar, sesame oil, garlic powder, sea salt, and crushed red pepper flakes. (I use the same bowl as the salad to save on doing the dishes, but you can also whisk the dressing in a smaller bowl and pour over the salad.)
- Toss the cabbage salad topping. Add vegetables (cabbage mixture, bell peppers, and scallions) and sunflower seeds.

- combined. Stir until well coated. If you have time, refrigerate to enhance the flavor. Garnish this slaw salad recipe with more scallions and sunflower seeds if you like.
