hamburger
- Oil: I prefer to use extra virgin olive oil Cook the meat, but avocado oil will work too.
- Ground beef: This recipe calls for 1 pound of ground beef. I recommend using lean ground beef (80% or more lean) to keep the fat content low and prevent the salad from becoming soggy.
- Burger Seasoning: I use mine Homemade burger seasoning mixbut you can also use any of your favorite store-bought options.
- Tomato sauce: This is optional but adds sweet and umami flavor to the beef!

Taste changes
One of my favorite things about this cheeseburger salad recipe is that you can easily mix and match different ingredients to make it your own. Some big changes include:
- Meat: Swap the ground beef for ground bison, ground turkey, or ground chicken.
- cheese: Use any flavor of cheese you like best, such as pepper jack, Monterey, or Swiss. Or, omit it entirely in your burger salad recipe.
- Sauce: Replace mustard with burger sauce, BBQ sauceor ketchup. Or you can omit it entirely if you prefer.
- Ingredients: Mix and match any of your favorite burger toppings, e.g. pickled onionsfried eggs, fried mushrooms, caramelized onionsor grilled pineapple.
How to Make Mustard Cheeseburger Salad
- Brown the beef: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add ground beef and burger seasoning. Brown until the meat is no longer pink, breaking it down as it cooks.

- Make the dressing: While the beef has cooled slightly, stir together all the seasoning ingredients in a jar or small bowl until smooth. Adjust seasonings to taste.
- Prepare the salad: Divide salad ingredients among four bowls. Then, top with burger mixture and 1-2 tablespoons of seasoning. Serve immediately!
Food recommendations
Honestly, I find this cheeseburger salad recipe to be quite filling on its own. However, if you want to add a side, you can never go wrong fries Or onion rings! Or, if you want a slightly healthier option, try adding sliced fruit.
Meal preparation options
This salad is great for meal prep and only needs a few twists. While the burger meat can be eaten cold if you prefer, this recipe is best served with hot or warm burger meat.
The best way to prepare a salad is to have a separate container for the salad ingredients and meat so the meat can heat itself. Of course, as with most salads, you'll want to apply mustard dressing before serving. So, separate that as well.
Just be careful with the salad ingredients you choose. Obviously, something like sliced avocado won't keep well. So if planning to make this for meal prep, ignore this.
Keeping all this in mind, this salad will keep for 3-5 hours in the refrigerator. When you're ready to serve, heat the meat in the microwave or skillet over medium heat and assemble as normal. It will taste as good as new!
