On Thursday night, two children were shot and injured in the Burger King’s Driveway restaurant in Durham, North Carolina, while they were waiting in the car for dinner.
According to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting took place at a fast food chain in the 1600 block of U.S. Highway 70 at around 7pm. Two children, 2 and 11 years old, were sitting in the back seat of a car when a bullet hit them through the window.
The police said the family left the area immediately and sent the life-threatening child to a local hospital.
Witnesses told investigators that they heard multiple gunshots from the car with two children being hit. Officials said they did not believe that the injured family members were the intended target of the shooting.
Durham Sheriff Clarence Birkhead (Clarence Birkhead) said that when he saw gun violence starting to affect the family, “I was ready to start talking enough.”
“As you know, Durham has experienced unprecedented gun violence,” Burkhead told WRAL News. “Again, we have innocent bystanders [who] Was caught in the meaningless gunfire in Durham. “
“All these cases are unfortunate, but when you see young people — our children — continue to be caught in these meaningless shootouts, it will definitely hit home,” he added.

Last weekend, a 6-year-old girl sleeping on a chair in the living room was shot by a bullet in a house in North Carolina.
At around 1 am on Saturday, someone shot at a family in Sampson County, hitting 6-year-old Bella Young. Her aunt told WRAL News that one of the bullets passed through the girl’s arm and entered her torso.
According to the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, the 6-year-old was taken to the emergency room at Cape Fair Valley Medical Center. Currently, the shooting is under investigation.
Yang’s aunt said she didn’t know why someone would target their home and added that although her arm needs to be rebuilt, the girl is expected to survive.
Statistics show that gun violence in North Carolina has increased in recent years.
According to a report from NC Policy Watch, a North Carolina Justice Center project, between 2019 and 2020, the number of gun-related deaths in the state increased by 31%, while the country increased by 25%. In 2020 alone, 670 people died from shootings in the state.
