China’s Tencent turns to facial recognition to attract late-night child gamers

Tencent also said that when changing security settings designed to allow parents to restrict children from playing games, it will begin to require users to pass facial recognition tests because “some children have stolen their parents’ phones” to modify the settings.

“Children, put your phone away and go to sleep,” the company said on social media on Tuesday.

The new features will initially be used in about 60 mobile games, including the popular multiplayer battle game “Glory of the King” with an average of more than 100 million daily users.

Chinese regulators are scrambling to meet the country’s huge demand for video games, especially those played on mobile phones, which have been blamed for social maladies such as Internet addiction and child myopia.

Since 2018, the government has introduced a series of new rules, including stricter restrictions on virtual depictions of violence and a quota on the number of online games approved each year.
