Chinese pop star Wu Yifan denies allegations of sexual assault

The topics of “Du Meizhu Interview” and “Du Meizhu’s Request for Wu Yifan to Announce His Resignation from the Entertainment Circle” received 1.8 billion and 440 million views respectively on Twitter-like platforms.

Domestic skin care brand Kans, music streaming platform Yunting, and household detergent manufacturer Liby announced that they will sever all ties with Wu.

The singer has signed several lucrative advertising contracts with foreign luxury brands including Lancome. Louis Vuitton, L’Oreal, Bulgari and Coyan’s.

In 2018, the China #MeToo movement initiated by feminist activists witnessed a small number of public figures falling out of favor due to allegations of sexual harassment, which gave ordinary women the courage to express their sexual assault experiences online for the first time.

However, victims find it difficult to seek justice through China’s opaque legal system.
