materials needed
- milk: I used almond milk, but feel free to use regular whole milk, skim milk, or any non-dairy milk of your choice.
- protein powder: Look for chocolate, grass-fed, whey protein powders. or whatever you want! Or, to make your smoothie dairy-free, use vegan chocolate protein powder.
- banana: Frozen bananas are key! You can freeze your own bananas or buy pre-frozen bananas at the store.
- chocolate: A little bit of chopped chocolate makes the shake richer and more chocolaty. This is optional, but worth it!
- Almond Butter: I use creamy almond butter. Feel free to use whatever brand you like best.
- Honey or maple syrup: For a little natural sweetness.
- Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds a subtle sweetness and extra flavor to smoothies.

Use a tablespoon of cocoa powder for a chocolatey taste!
Want to use a different nut butter?
Go for it! Anything will do!

Do bananas need to be frozen?
As annoying as this is, we agree on using frozen bananas. Frozen bananas add a creamy element to this smoothie. Smoothies won’t be as thick and creamy without it.
You can freeze bananas whole (this lasts longer) or sliced. If slicing, you probably want to use them up within a few days.
Is almond butter good for a protein shake or smoothie?
completely! Not only does almond butter add to the overall flavor of your protein shake, but it also adds a good amount of protein itself.
In addition to protein, almond butter also provides antioxidants and healthy fats.
Does almond butter thicken smoothies?
Yes. Almond butter adds a rich, nutty flavor to smoothies, boosting nutrition, and Contributes to its thick, creamy texture.
There is really no downside!

Tips and Variations
- Use frozen bananas. Frozen bananas are the key to this thick and creamy chocolate banana smoothie. Fresh bananas will not yield the same texture.
- If you’re freezing your own bananas for smoothies, Freeze them when they are good and ripe for the ultimate sweetness.
- Serve immediately. Smoothies are best straight out of the blender!
- Don’t want to use protein powder? Try swapping it out for 1 scoop of collagen peptides and 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder.
- If you like thick milkshakes, Use less milk or add avocado or frozen cauliflower.
- For thinner smoothies, Just add more milk.
- For additional nutrition, Mix in a small amount of flax, chia or hemp seeds.
- Make a Peanut Butter Chocolate Smoothie. You can swap out the almond butter for peanut butter if you like. I can attest that this is indeed very similar to a peanut butter cup.
