Lamont-Dougherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) is the scientific research center of the Columbia Institute of Climatology. For more than 50 years, we have been holding the annual LDEO Open Day to show neighbors, members of the Colombian community and general audiences how our planet works and the research we have done at LDEO.
LDEO scientists study the earth in every continent and every ocean from the deepest interior to the outer periphery of the atmosphere, providing a reasonable basis for the difficult choices faced by mankind. The observatory is composed of more than 500 scientists, students and staff who study everything from climate change to earthquakes, volcanoes, non-renewable resources, environmental hazards and more.Since its establishment, LDEO has been a global leader in the field of earth sciences, and we have some of the most important discoveries, including The first map of the seabed with First proof For the theory of plate tectonics. The LDEO Open Day introduces these findings and our ongoing research to children and families in a fun and interactive way.
This year, we provided another version of the “LDEO To Go” package for K12 students, bringing the hands-on learning experience of Open House to the family. In the 2021 data package, we showcased our nine scientists in the form of collectible baseball-like cards. Each card provides introductory information about the scientists, briefly introduces their scientific expertise and the tools they need to carry out their work, and provides us with some personal and interesting facts. From veteran rock stars who lay the foundations of earth and environmental sciences to early professional scientists engaged in cutting-edge work, we have unique characteristics.
In addition to the card, the pack also includes a DIY wildcard so that the recipient can draw themselves as a future scientist, and a paper craft model and activities to reveal how our featured scientists are better in their field work.
