Columbia Professor Shahid Naeem will serve as President of the American Ecological Society
Shahid NaimThe head of the Center for Environmental Sustainability of the Earth Institute has been elected president of the American Ecological Society.this Society of 9,000 membersFounded in 1915, it is the world’s largest community of professional ecologists. Naeem will serve in 2023-2024.
Naeem is an ecologist and conservation biologist, Lenfest Distinguished Professor, and Chair of the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology at Columbia University.He is the editor-in-chief of the magazine Biodiversity, ecosystem function and human well-being And the main author of a new book, Sustainable food production. He has published more than 100 scientific papers.
“Shahid brings to ESA curiosity and insight into the ecological world, as well as an understanding of the key role that biodiversity plays in supporting ecosystems and humans,” said Denis Kojima, the current chairman of ESA . “These insights and enthusiasm for the ecological world will provide insightful leadership.”
Naeem earlier received the honor of being appointed an ESA researcher and received the Buell and Mercer awards from the association.
“In this era of unprecedented change, it’s hard to imagine any organization that can be more exciting, important, and interesting,” Naeem said. “I am very pleased to be able to obtain the privileges granted to me by its members to join its leadership and staff to continue to promote academic, practical and diversity in the fields of ecology, evolution and environmental science.”
Naeem received his master’s and doctorate degrees. He received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1990, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Michigan, the University of Copenhagen, and Imperial College London. Before joining Columbia University in 2003, he taught at the University of Minnesota and the University of Washington.
