Dance, Music and Food Kick Off AAPI Heritage Month Seattle Celebration

SEATTLE – Celebrations of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month will kick off at the Seattle Center Armory on May 1, the first day of National Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.

Following last year’s virtual festival, this year will feature five hours of programming including the ever-popular Alan Sugiyama humming and eating competition, dance troupe, martial arts, music and more.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said, “Asia Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrates the unique and unique AAPI culture and community that help make Seattle special.”

The show started at noon with the International Lion Dance Team and opening speeches, and ended with Kazuki Taiko and closing speeches. During the event, MiYoung Margolis Dance Company, Huayin Performing Arts Group, Halau Hula Ka Lei Mokihana | Ka Ua Noe, UWFASA Sayaw, Nikhil Bagga Band, Wu Shu Martial Arts, UW Vietnam Student Association Dance Company, Live2Dance Seattle and The Kompany will perform on stage.

The Hum Bow Eating competition will begin at 2pm with chefs from nine local restaurants and bakeries. There will also be a cultural performance video, and local author Cindy Wong-Li will do a children’s reading for her book Starhug.
