DuckDuckGo celebrates a milestone of 100 billion total searches, but the search engine’s year-over-year growth is slowing.
In an announcement on Twitter, DuckDuckGo highlighted the fact that it hit 100 billion private Search and notice:
- Your search history is not a data point
- What you searched for is with you
- Users acknowledge their right to privacy and choose to use it
Thanks to you, we have reached 100 billion private searches! https://t.co/qlSaz4j9ZH
That’s 100B times:
• Your search history is not a data point
• What you search for (like cat memes) is your business and only your business
• You acknowledge your privacy and choose it! 🤗 pic.twitter.com/HyvMOBK26E

However, if you dig into the numbers, it’s clear that the selling point of private search engines is losing traction.
Average daily search volume growth on DuckDuckGo 17% From January 2021 to January 2022.
This is DuckDuckGo’s slowest growth rate over the past five years, and a sharp drop from the 2019-2020 growth.
Average daily search volume growth on DuckDuckGo from January 2019 to January 2020 52%.
In the years before that, it was over 60% grow.
Here’s a breakdown of DuckDuckGo’s growth in daily searches:
- January 2021 to January 2022 – 17% increase
- January 2019 to January 2020 – 52% increase
- January 2018 to January 2019 – 62% increase
- January 2017 to January 2018 – 61% increase
- January 2016 to January 2017 – 30% increase
At the very least, DuckDuckGo maintained the growth it achieved from 2019 to 2020, and grew slightly.
This is a good thing compared to the year-over-year decline in daily searches.
More evidence of DuckDuckGo’s declining popularity
Last January, all signs pointed to an unprecedented increase in DuckDuckGo’s popularity.
Not only does the search volume exceed Year-on-year growth of 50%, but it ranks #1 in the Utilities category on the iOS App Store.
DuckDuckGo even entered the top 10 on the iOS App Store among all apps.
It ranks 18th in the utility category, too low among all apps for the data to be available.
But wait, there’s more!
This time last year, DuckDuckGo was the No. 2 mobile search engine in the United States.
this year it lost Yahoo’s second position. DuckDuckGo is now the third most popular mobile search engine among US searchers.
Regardless, DuckDuckGo is running out of steam.
Search engines may lack innovation.
In addition to the company’s announced plans Launch a desktop browser.
Another possibility is that protecting one’s privacy on the web isn’t a big concern for many.
The data suggests that there are a sufficient number of users who care enough about privacy to change their search behavior, and perhaps DuckDuckGo has covered most of those people.
While DuckDuckGo touts the importance of online privacy, it can also be a hindrance to the quality of search results.
This is especially true when it comes to local searches. Since DuckDuckGo doesn’t know your exact location, its search results struggle to provide the same value as Google’s local SERPs.
Let’s see if the 100 billion milestone encourages DuckDuckGo to continue building on what it’s already created and offer searchers more.
