“Egg McMuffin is the first fast food restaurant breakfast sandwich ever. It was added to McDonald’s menu in Santa Barbara, California in 1971. Since then, customers have been creative with it.” Molly McKenna says, McDonald’s senior director of brand communications, in the release.
Using the app will allow customers to “crack” their Egg McMuffin with anything they want, such as cheese, bacon, chicken, tomatoes. Another idea is to use muffins instead of hash browns.
This iconic sandwich was invented by Herb Peterson in 1971 and made its debut in 1972 after Peterson thought of an idea for a project inspired by eggs Benedict. This sandwich was subsequently launched nationwide in 1975. The fast food giant’s new initiative came on the occasion of Taco Bell’s free breakfast burrito a month ago. McDonald’s applications already account for 20% of its sales.
