Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for your tuna egg salad recipe, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- mayonnaise – I use my own homemade mayonnaise When I have time, but store bought will work just fine (this is my favourite brand). You can also substitute Greek yogurt if you prefer.
- Dijon mustard – You can also use regular yellow mustard.
- fresh parsley – Fresh herbs work best here, but you can substitute 1 teaspoon of dried parsley in a pinch. You can also try using fresh cilantro or fresh dill.
- chili – I used regular paprika, but you can also use smoked paprika. You can also add 1/2 teaspoon of cumin, paprika, or even curry powder for extra flavor.
- tuna – many people like Solid Albacore Tuna Because of its texture, but I like to mix it block light and canned white albacore – that way I get the perfect balance of price and texture.
- celery – a crunchy contrast to the creaminess of the tuna and egg salad.
- Pickle – I used chopped dill pickles, but you can also use a sweet pickle vinaigrette (watch out for added sugar or corn syrup on the label).
- white onion – Use red onions for a stronger flavor, yellow onions for a sweeter flavor, or shallots for a milder flavor.
- hard boiled eggs – hard poaching eggs on the stove (Easy Peel Method), baked hard boiled eggsor for a faster method, air fried hard boiled eggs.
- sea salt and black pepper
