Elephant march: China’s rogue herd focuses on habitat loss

Asimsa Campos-Alcez, an elephant expert at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, told AFP: “For some reason, these elephants felt that their traditional habitat was no longer suitable… and then they left looking other places.”

“But they didn’t think of a destination. They just walked around trying to find a place that suits them.”

Officials have been using drones to track stray cattle around the clock, worrying that if they feel stressed, they might run rampant.

Elephant They rely on infrasound waves—the vibration of their feet—to communicate, but in towns, they can easily be confused by vehicle noise.

“What surprises me most is that these elephants are very healthy, although they roam in densely populated and unfamiliar areas, they look very happy,” Campos-Alcez said.

“These elephants are very naughty, which tells me they are good,” he added.
