In Arugam Bay, I had the opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage of this small fishing town. One of my favorite parts of traveling is trying some local Sri Lankan food. From grilled fish curry and skewers to kottu roti (grilled flatbread with vegetables and spices), there is something for everyone!
The people of Arugam Bay also have a deep appreciation for art, music and dance. During my stay, I saw many art galleries displaying local art, musicians performing in the streets (especially during the annual parade), and amazing traditional dancers serenading the audience. It’s worth taking time out from your surf lessons or beach day to experience some of these cultural gems!

You can also visit the famous Kandakuliya Temple near Pottuvil. It is considered one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka and ceremonies are still performed today. If you’re looking for a delicious meal or two, try one of the local seafood restaurants – you won’t regret it! After a long journey, we finally arrived at Arugam Bay, a small town on the east coast of Sri Lanka. Once there, I felt the magic of the place.
