A federal judge temporarily blocked the governor of Texas Greg AbbottThe executive order instructed the National Guard to intercept any vehicle transporting migrants previously intercepted by the Customs and Border Protection Agency under “reasonable suspicion.”

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone issued a temporary injunction on Tuesday, which will continue while the case is unfolding.The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Abbott and Texas on Friday after the U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland Wrote a letter to Abbott warning him to revoke his order, which he called “dangerous and illegal.”

Abbott’s order was signed last Wednesday and stated that it aimed to limit the spread of COVID-19, but was condemned by multiple humanitarian groups.

The order stated that soldiers should stop “vehicles at risk of carrying COVID-19.”
