Finding hobbies as an adult

As kids and teens, our schedules are filled with sports, activities, camps and clubs. As we age, our lives become hectic and over time we forget to do things just for fun. Taking on new things as an adult can be scary and overwhelming. Not to mention the feeling that we can’t justify prioritizing just for fun over work or family-related things.

But finding a hobby as an adult can be a wonderful way to learn new things, meet new people, relax, and have fun. We often feel that we don’t have enough time for hobbies, or that it adds to the stress. In fact, People who work on hobbies are less likely to suffer from stress, low mood and depression. Taking up hobbies is also said to improve mental health and well-being, making you more relaxed and happy. Hobbies are a way of expressing who we are and making time for ourselves. Taking up a hobby is a form of self-care, and you’ll appreciate that you take the time to honor yourself and your creativity.

The truth is, it’s never too late to try something new. While stepping out of your comfort zone can feel a little intimidating, as an adult, finding something that brings you joy just for fun can pay off enormously. If you need a little help getting started, here are some ideas for different hobbies to consider trying. You never know what you will find in the process. What did you like as a child?

As children, we are usually very clear about what we like. As we get older, when we are busy with work and family, we may neglect the activities that make us happy. When considering possible hobbies, think back to things you enjoyed doing as a child. Do you enjoy baking with mom or drawing in art class? How can you channel these hobbies now? Try a cooking class or start a baking club with friends. Join a painting class or buy some materials to start painting at home.

What ignited the fire within you?

We all have things in our lives that make us feel truly alive. When we think about them or do them, we feel this energy and passion bursting out of our hearts. That’s how I feel when I teach kids or adults yoga, writing, reading, dancing, or hiking. List all the things that bring passion and spirit to your life. How can you turn these things into a hobby? Don’t limit yourself! If there are no classes or clubs in your area, can you gather a group of like-minded people and create your own club or group?

Squeeze out time.

Why is it so hard for us to make time for ourselves? Our culture tells us that we must continually work or serve our families in order for our actions to be productive and rational. But no matter what society tells you, you should take time for yourself. Taking time is very important and beneficial to our own well-being and mental health. Not to mention, if you do, you’ll be happier and more relaxed at work and at home. Think about a day, week or month you can take some time and put it on your calendar so you don’t miss it. Discuss it with your family or your other responsibilities and make sure everyone is involved so you can get through this time and feel good about it without guilt.

Did you enjoy drawing in art class as a child? Or maybe you’ve recently discovered the relaxing and meditative state of Paint By Numbers. Try a painting class or invest in an easel and some paint, then try experimenting at home. I recently read about someone who started watercolor painting with their kids during the pandemic and it has now become a hobby and career of their own. Try something with your child and see how it can help inspire the inner child.

Painting is a relaxing and creative hobby. When I used to teach, my 3rd graders liked to draw as a way to relax after recess or while listening to a read. I love that every child has their own unique style and there are very few students who don’t participate. As adults, we label ourselves with things like “I’m not art” or “I can’t draw,” but don’t limit ourselves. There are many books and resources to get you started. Read books, watch video tutorials, take classes and start learning your style. There is no right or wrong way to paint. Give it a try and see what happens.

Knitting, sewing and crocheting

Knitting, sewing and crocheting are other incredible relaxing and meditative hobbies. The beauty of these hobbies is that you can make cozy items for the cold winter ahead. You can also make gifts for the holidays. Homemade gifts are always the best, made with love, time and thoughtfulness. All of these activities involve dexterity and fine motor skills that we don’t normally use as adults. It involves patience, attention to detail, and a high level of focus, which is very beneficial for freeing our brains from constant thoughts.


Writing is a great way to express yourself and it’s easy to get started. All you need is a pen and a notepad. Maybe you started by keeping a journal or writing poetry. It can be as simple as jotting down your thoughts for the day. There are really no rules, and honestly, the more you write, the easier it is. Put the pen on the paper and see where it takes you.

Some of my friends have a book club, which is a fun way to guarantee monthly gatherings. It’s hard to get everyone to go there every month with family responsibilities, but it’s nice to be able to join at work. We rotate the activity and who picks the book each month. Sometimes we don’t even discuss the book, but it’s just a good excuse to get together with women and enjoy each other’s company. It’s so fun to read, it’s great to have a group to share. If you prefer to read, you can discuss the content of your meeting by asking questions or topics related to reading. You can take turns having meals in the members house, going out to eat, drink coffee or take a walk. The options are endless!


Dancing is a fun way to relax and open up. If you loved dancing as a child or teen, but lost it a bit later, try to rekindle the dancing flame by taking a class or workshop. There are many different types of dances to choose from, you can choose a dance you know and love, or you can try something completely new. You can try anything from hip hop to jazz or tap dancing and even belly dancing! why not? There are some great fitness apps that now include dance classes as well.Check both fitness!


Walking and hiking are fairly easy hobbies because you just get out of the house and follow the road. It does not involve investing in offerings or registering anything. If you like company, invite friends or schedule a weekly walking group. If you prefer walking alone, try walking quietly, enjoying the sounds and sights without being distracted. You can try new paths or routes and discover new favorite adventures!


Yoga is a wonderful hobby because it is so beneficial to your mind, body and soul. Yoga combines breathing work, meditation, and movement, so it touches many aspects of health and wellness in one activity. I love yoga because it helps me get back into my mind and body and prepares me both physically and mentally for my day. It also helps me overcome life’s challenges and stay awake when I’m stressed or overwhelmed. Try joining a local yoga studio and start by signing up for one class a week.Or better yet, join an online yoga class forum like Glo Do yoga from the comfort of your home!


You love pottery, have you always wanted to make your own? Join a local ceramics class to learn the trade. Ceramics is not something you can really do independently, so you need a teacher to help you get started, providing materials, machinery, etc. This is something I want to try for a while.


Did you ever do a play as a kid and then forget about it? Audition for a small role at your local theater, get involved, or volunteer backstage to help get your toes wet first. This will help you decide if it’s something you’re actually interested in. Putting yourself out there like this can be so fragile and scary. Maybe ask a theater friend to join you in this new endeavor.


Did you love to play ice hockey in high school, but your equipment has been sitting in the garage for ten years and hasn’t been touched? Me too!Or maybe you’ve been like tennis or snowboard But just haven’t had the time to do it recently. Find a buddy to join you, or start over with a class. With so many sports leagues and club sports in every town, they are always looking for new members. Pickleball is an indoor or outdoor sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s taking over and everyone seems to enjoy playing! See what’s available around you and have some fun with some competition and exercise.


loves singing? Join a church choir or a cappella group. Search local listings for other singing opportunities in your area. It’s never too late to explore new things, and maybe even break through the fears that hold you back!
