The founding dean of the Climate School delivered the opening remarks. “This event marks the completion of your studies at Columbia,” he said. “More importantly, it marks the beginning of the important work you will do in the world, understanding how the climate system works, the challenges it presents, and the way to think about the solutions needed.” Photo: Michael DiVito

The keynote speaker was Peggy Shepard, co-founder and executive director of the nonprofit WE ACT for Environmental Justice. “Those of us who are fortunate enough to have education, skills and experience, even power, we have to be role models,” she said. “We must be change makers with justice, collaboration and ethical leadership.
