U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. has finally decided to set up an assembly plant in Cambodia for the production of the Ford Ranger and Ford Everest model lines in Cambodia, after the project was approved in September last year.
Through its local partner and distributor RMA Automotive Cambodia, Ford said it will invest $21 million in the first phase to build an assembly line that is scheduled to start production in April this year.
Located in the Krakow Special Economic Zone in Cambodia’s Pursat Province, about 160 kilometers northwest of Phnom Penh, the plant covers an area of more than 4 hectares and plans to assemble 4,500 vehicles for the Cambodian market in its first year. The factory will create up to 500 jobs for locals on the production line.
Improve living standards through job creation
The governor of Pusat province, Mao Tonin, said the factory will help improve the living standards and alleviate poverty of the people in the province, that is, create employment opportunities for the locals.
There are also plans to attract some of Ford’s suppliers to make parts at the plant’s site, he added.
RMA Automotive Cambodia is Ford’s local partner in Cambodia, distributing Ford vehicles, Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles, and John Deere agricultural machinery. RMA also operates a Ford Service Centre in the Toul Sangke district in north-central Phnom Penh.
In 2020, the Ford Ranger was the best-selling new car in Cambodia, according to RMA’s annual report for that year.
