Trouble in the Pumpkin Field

I planted thousands of square feet a few years ago pumpkinplace nice hills about 8-10 feet apart, clear weeds, place compost On the mountain, everything is done right.
The vines were all over the place, running wildly from the hills to the cocoa farm next door. However, the yield was terrible. I worked so hard to get six small to medium pumpkins. I would do better if I bought the pumpkin from a roadside stand.
I tried it again the following year in another location and my squash seemed to be battling a nutrient deficiency that made the leaves small and yellow and the fruit barely worth picking.
The following year, I moved to another location to grow squash, this time in thick black clay. I dug up the beautiful hills and poured them in fish and compost and they grew well.

Then the grape borers killed most of them, and by the end of the season I had only three or four squashes left.
I’m planting pumpkins again this week on a brand new piece of land.

Whenever you feel like giving up, it helps to remember the words of Commander Peter Quincy Taggart.
“Never give up! Never surrender!”
Of course, that doesn’t mean you should go the extra mile on failure. Just because I’ve been battling squash and tomatoes, another Achilles heel of mine, doesn’t mean I should.
If you really want to plant a specific thing and it keeps escaping you, that’s fine. keep fighting. Keep trying. Keep testing different varieties and different methods.
But if you find yourself failing and getting discouraged with all your gardening, it’s time to change your approach.

Smart people learn from experience. If you’re lucky with a particular variety of carrots, be sure to plant it again!
If your kale is dying, but your mustard is thriving, you might give up the kale and grow mustard instead. I learned that cauliflower and broccoli work well for me in North Florida, but not Brussels sprouts. I stopped growing the latter.

In the tropics, I learned cabbage Grows much better than most other annual vegetables so I’m going to plant more.when my cauliflower and kale The transplant gave up the ghost and I noticed my pak choi was thriving and decided to double down.
It makes sense to plant many different things to determine what is good and what is not in your garden.
If Kentucky beans have good success, but scarlet beans have bad luck, plant more Kentucky beans. If sweet corn is not good for you, but king pecan dent corn works well, plant more king pecans and eat grits instead of corn on the cob.
5 Troubleshooting Questions When Dealing With Gardening Failure
If you haven’t had much success with anything, it’s time to see what else might have gone wrong.
Ask yourself:
- Am I watering enough? Water scarcity is a major limiting factor for plant growth. Don’t make them thirsty.
- Am I planting too close? Crowding vegetables together can lead to low yields and stunted growth. The earlier the wider the thinner.
- Am I buying bad seeds? Don’t skimp on seeds. Buy from a good company with a good reputation.
- Have I sinned against God? Did you build your garden on an ancient tomb? Did you cut down a sacred oak tree? Or bring home a voodoo doll from your Caribbean vacation? If you are a pagan, you may consider offering sacrifices. If not, talk to your pastor about organizing prayer meetings and/or exorcisms.
- Are you dealing with defects? Poor soil can lead to low yields and disease problems. Be sure to add compost to your bed and provide your plants with plenty of macro and micronutrients.
Don’t let gardening failure put you off. Think of it as a learning opportunity and be prepared to adjust how you plant and how you plant it when things go wrong.
