Google announced that it will use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models to automatically update business hours and real-world road information.
The goal of these initiatives is to provide users with more up-to-date information about changes in the community.
Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence for more accurate information
Although research into artificial intelligence began in the 1950s, breakthroughs in deep learning have only recently begun. This is mainly because machine learning has made remarkable progress after 2010.
“In my experience, I’ve found that ML algorithms are no longer the bottleneck. They’re far from perfect, to be sure, and there’s still a lot of work to be done, but it’s happening at an astonishing rate,” said the former Amazon AI Lab. Edo Liberty, head of Similarity Search and now CEO of Pinecone, a vector database, said in a Interview with Search Engine Journal, February 22.
Corresponding to the rise of big data, these advancements have enabled artificial intelligence to develop at an incredible rate.
Google uses artificial intelligence to update business hours
Coronavirus disease Changed the way many businesses do business, including opening hours for retailers and restaurants. In response to these changes and better search engine users, Google has developed a machine-learning model that can automatically identify whether working hours might be wrong.
As soon as it finds wrong business hours, Google updates the company’s business profile with AI-generated forecasts.
For example, a business’ profile might show that it was closed on Monday but hasn’t been updated in over a year.
If Google determines that its busiest times are usually Monday nights, it recognizes that those times may be out of date and automatically updates them.
It also uses Street View imagery of storefronts to identify business hour signs, while enlisting the help of local guides and business owners to validate predictions.
Contact business owners using Google Duplexan artificial intelligence system that allows people to have natural conversations with computers over the phone and complete real-world tasks.
Google predicts that the technology will help it update the work hours of more than 20 million businesses around the world within the next six months.
ML updates real-world road conditions
Google also announced that it is experimenting with other ways in which images can be used for AI and ML. Starting in the U.S., it is launching a pilot of third-party imagery that provides up-to-date speed limit information.
The goal of this technology is to improve driver safety and add details that can improve driving efficiency. Google hopes to eventually add information about potholes, school districts and buildings.
The emphasis on privacy remains high
This pilot is designed with privacy as a key component. Reference images are from public roads only. Partners will also be required to obscure identifying information, including faces and license plates.
Once Google receives an image, it blurs the photo again, then deletes it after the map is updated.
