Greek Salad Ingredients
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for an authentic Greek salad, the role each ingredient plays in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
In Greek, Horiatiki Translates to “village” or “farmer,” which is why this traditional Greek salad is sometimes called a country salad. Here’s what you need:
- tomato – I used halved grape tomatoes, but cherry tomatoes would work just as well. Larger tomatoes can also be used – just cut into large chunks.
- cucumber – Depending on their size, cut them into half moons or quarter moons. Any variety of cucumber will work in this Greek Cucumber Salad.
- red onion – Cut into thin slices. Red onions work best with the other flavors here, but you can also use white onions if you prefer. If you don’t like onions, you can substitute other crunchy vegetables, such as bell peppers.
- Kalamata Olives -These are most commonly found in Greek salad recipes, but black olives work too if you have them. Either way, make sure they have cores and cut them in half.
- greek sauce – Store-bought dressing will work too, but for the best flavor, make your own Greek Salad Dressing Use extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, dried oregano, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper. It only takes a few minutes! lemon vinaigrette Works fine here too.
- feta cheese – Adds creamy texture and tangy flavor to salads. For a dairy-free version, just omit the cheese.
Variations: Add lettuce or fresh herbs!
Greeks don’t add lettuce or other vegetables to traditional Greek salads, which always surprises many Americans when compared to the salads we have in the US. But there’s nothing wrong with adding lettuce or other greens if you want. You may need an extra few tablespoons of dressing to make up for it.
You can also add fresh herbs such as fresh dill or parsley.
As for me?I also grew up in the US, but in my Eastern European family we often had salads without lettuce, like Radish Salad and Creamy Cucumber Salad.

- Stir in dressing. In just a few minutes, you may have your ingredients ready.study how to make greek sauce here.
- Get your vegetables ready. Chop the vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and red onions) and place in a large bowl. Add feta cheese too.

- combined. Pour dressing over salad and toss to coat.

Tip: You can add feta cheese with the vegetables or at the end.
I combined the feta with the veggies in the steps and pictures above, but it holds together better if you toss the veggies with the dressing first before adding it.
storage instructions
You can chop the vegetables ahead of time and store the Greek salad ingredients and dressing in a separate container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. This dressing can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
If you have leftovers from a whole salad, they will probably keep for a day or so in the refrigerator.
