Greta Thunberg and thousands of climate activists took over Glasgow on Friday to protest their lack of climate action on their way to the UN COP26 summit.
The protesters met in Kelvin Grove Park at 11:30 am GMT, and walked about 20 minutes to reach the convention center. They chanted “We are unstoppable, another world is possible.” Although led by Thunberg, the parade was organized by Fridays for Future Scotland.
As COP26 shifts the focus of its activities to the impact of climate change on future generations, the protests remind people that as the first week of the summit draws to a close, world leaders are facing increasing pressure to cope with global warming.
During the protest, Thunberg referred to COP26 as “failure”, “exclusiveness” and “Global Northern Green Washing Festival”. The Washington Post reports.
“The failure of COP26 is no secret,” Thunberg said. “It is clear that this crisis cannot be resolved by the method that initially plunged us into crisis.”
Young climate activists appeal COP26 is the “most exclusive” UN climate summit ever. As Many poor countries most affected by climate change cannot participate Due to COVID restrictions.
However, this is not what some leaders conveyed.
Manish Bapna, chairman of the Natural Resources Defense Council, told the Washington Post that countries have made major commitments to prevent deforestation, reduce methane emissions, and stop financing overseas fossil fuel projects.
“Compared to a few months ago, COP26 may unfold in a way that exceeds expectations. This is in large part because I think we have seen some countries-some important countries-strengthen,” Bapner said.
With only one week left, activists are waiting to see the future of the entire world as they continue to pressure leaders at the climate summit.
