If you sit there and ask, “What is a boiled egg?”, you are not alone!A lot of people haven’t heard of them (and neither have I), and I’m here to tell you: this pampered egg recipe is one of the world’s best-kept secrets breakfast world.
I learned how to pamper eggs a few years ago on a trip to northern Minnesota near Lake Superior, a romantic trip with my husband a decade ago. After a day of hiking and an evening of observing the star-studded sky and talking late into the night, we woke up to a perfect homemade breakfast prepared by our little B&B host…eggs.Out of curiosity, I asked her for more details and she was happy to share what pampered eggs are, how she makes them, and what pot to use.
What are eggs?
as baked eggs Or poached eggs, a hard-boiled egg (aka eggs en cocotte) is an egg that has been lightly cooked so that the white is firm but not hard and the yolk is soft and slightly runny. It is usually cooked by submerging it in hot water in a shallow container called an egg pot. This way of cooking eggs originated in England in the 1800s.

Types of balls
Many people who sell eggs on the market are called “egg stealers”, probably because more people are familiar with poaching. All these are actually spoilers, no Poachers, because poaching eggs involves placing the eggs directly in water, whereas pampered eggs are cooked in containers partially submerged in water. Here are options for egg spoilers:
- large saucepan with multiple eggs – Eager to replicate the bed and breakfast egg poaching recipe, I ordered this egg poacher as soon as I got home and impatiently waited for it to arrive. It’s the same kind the owner of the B&B uses and I love that it makes up to 6 eggs at a time.
- Porcelain Singles – This one is perfect for a serving.
- Silicone Coddler Cup – These cups are multifunctional so you can also use them as cake, dessert or jelly molds.
Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for hard-boiled eggs, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- Egg – I used large eggs. The size of the eggs is less important, but the time will vary slightly depending on the size of the eggs. Larger eggs take longer to cook and smaller eggs take less time to cook. Make sure the eggs are cold, not room temperature, this will keep the yolk from overcooking.
- seasoning – I seasoned these eggs with sea salt and black pepper, but you can use other seasonings such as garlic powder if you prefer.
- shredded cheese – I used shredded cheddar cheese, but you can use Colby, mozzarella, or any shredded cheese you like. Shredded cheeses such as feta, goat, or blue cheese also work well.
- fresh herbs – Although optional, fresh herbs add vibrant color and onion flavor. I used fresh chives, but you can also use other chopped herbs like basil, thyme or parsley.
- cooking oil – You need something to lubricate the inside of the eggcups so they don’t stick together. Butter, ghee, or any kind of cooking oil will work here.

How long does it take to raise eggs?
Egg care time depends on how much you like the yolk. Cook for 4-5 minutes for runny yolks and 5-7 minutes for hard yolks.
What is the Difference Between Egg and Egg? Poached eggs?
Hard-boiled eggs are similar to poached eggs in that both have soft whites and runny yolks. However, poached eggs are cooked by poaching the eggs in water, while soft-boiled eggs are cooked in a pan.
Recipe Variations

storage instructions
- shop: If you have leftover eggs, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days. Freezing is not recommended as the texture will change.
- Reheat: It’s easiest to heat it in the microwave. I find that if I only heat it for 10-20 seconds, the yolk is runny. You can also try reheating the eggs in the egg cooker again.
