What is granola made of?
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for homemade granola, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- oatmeal – Oatmeal is best for granola recipes. Avoid quick-cooking or steel-cut oats, as they won’t yield the classic granola texture. If you need gluten-free granola, make sure the package says “Certified Gluten-Free,” as some brands may be exposed to gluten during processing.
- mixed nuts and seeds – I used a mix of pecans, pumpkin seeds (pepitas) and hemp seeds. Other nuts and seeds, such as walnuts, almonds or sunflower seeds, are also effective. For convenience, feel free to use a bag of mixed nuts.
- sea salt – Adding a little salt to homemade granola helps bring out the sweetness.
- Cinnamon – Paired with maple syrup, the cinnamon perfectly complements the sweet and savory flavors. Feel free to ignore it if you’re not a fan.
- coconut oil – The melted coconut oil helps the granola crunch and form clusters. You can also use extra virgin olive oil or melted unsalted butter.
- Maple sugar – Adds sweetness and helps the granola stick together.I often use Sugar-Free Maple Syrup, but you can also make this granola recipe with real maple syrup. Honey also works well.
- vanilla extract – Use high-quality vanilla extract for best flavor.
- dried fruit – Although optional, dried fruit adds a touch of sweetness to this healthy granola recipe. Some bags of mixed nuts contain raisins, but you can also use dried cranberriesApricots, Blueberries Or Cherries.

Tips for the Best Granola Recipe
Crave-worthy granola is all about striking the right balance of sweet and savory, crunchy and chewy. Here are a few tips to make this easy granola recipe perfect:
- experiment. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of nuts and seeds. Flaxseeds, cashews, pistachios, and chia seeds are all great additions to granola.
- Sweet to your taste. Feel free to taste the granola to check for doneness before baking. You can adjust the amount of maple syrup to your liking. I make mine a little sweeter.
- Arrange in thin layers. If your pan is too small and you spread the granola thickly, it won’t cook evenly.
- Stir if you don’t want lumps. I like my granola chunky so I don’t stir it during baking, but if you like yours finer, stir it every 10-15 minutes during baking.
- Let cool completely. Allow the granola to cool completely before attempting to break it up. It won’t fully crisp until it cools.
Granola Recipe Flavor Variations
- chocolate – Swap the dried fruit for chocolate chips for a chocolate granola.I prefer to use Sugar Free Chocolate Chips (It’s healthy granola after all), but any will do.
- caramel – use brown sugar (or best brown) instead of maple syrup. You can also omit the dried fruit and drizzle Sugar Free Caramel Sauce Serve.
- Honey – while equally delicious, honey imparts a different sweetness to these oats.If you like your granola with honey, you can serve it in this granola (or unsweetened honey) instead of maple syrup.
- pumpkin – use cinnamon instead Pumpkin Pie Spice A taste of autumn.
