Communication is something we ignore because it’s easy for us. For children who are still learning the world, the process of developing skills can be difficult because it requires the opportunity to develop and exercise them. This makes exposure to social situations important. You can do something by involving your child in an activity club of their choice or in a community project together. If you’re looking for tips on how to develop your child’s communication skills, look no further because we have some from Independent Schools at Potters Bar the following.
talk to your child
It’s that simple. Talking to your child can help them become better communicators because they can practice verbalizing their thoughts and feelings, as can talking to people they feel comfortable with.
word of the day
Vocabulary enriches our speech, which is why it is important that you work with your child to structure their speech. This can be done through tools that generate new random words (like Word of the Day) or through reading.
build confidence
While your child may have great things to contribute, they may not yet have the confidence to do so. This prevents them from building their communication skills. One way you can help is to show your child that what they say has value. You can also use praise and set an example by showing them how you can confidently interact and communicate with others.
Ask them about their day
Sometimes it’s hard to start a conversation. You can do this by asking them about their day. This can also teach them how to break the ice and socialize so they can do it easily.
