Ingredients and Substitutes

This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for homemade hibachi chicken, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.

Sizzling Chicken:

  • olive oil – For frying chicken. Avocado oil and coconut oil can be substituted for olive oil. You’ll also need oil for fried rice and hibachi vegetables.
  • chicken – I used boneless skinless chicken breasts, but you can also use boneless skinless chicken thighs if you prefer dark meat. Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces.
  • butter – Add flavor. I used unsalted butter because I like to control the amount of salt. Chicken, rice, and vegetables need butter.
  • coconut aminos – Similar to soy sauce, coconut aminos add sweet and savory flavors to dishes. Chicken, fried rice, and vegetables all need it. Alternatively, you can use low-sodium soy sauce instead.
  • condiment – I keep it simple with just salt and pepper, but you can add garlic powder, paprika and/or ginger for extra flavor. Add paprika if you like a little kick.
Variations: Add other proteins!

make hibachi chicken and shrimp or hibachi chicken and steak By using the same ingredients as chicken. Cook for steak 3-5 minutes per side and for shrimp 1-2 minutes per side.

fried rice:

  • frozen vegetables – I use frozen peas and carrots – a classic for fried rice. You can also use fresh vegetables.
  • garlic – Although optional, I highly recommend adding fresh garlic to this rotisserie chicken recipe. It enhances the deliciousness of the dish. You can also use 1 teaspoon instead of 2 cloves of fresh garlic canned minced garlicor 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder.
  • Egg – Classic flavor, texture and protein.
  • cooked white rice – Any kind of rice will do! You can use medium grain white rice, long grain rice (which is less starchy), jasmine rice, basmati rice, or choose light, Cauliflower Fried Rice.
  • sesame oil – Added a finishing touch. This is totally optional, but makes the dish taste like restaurant-style fried rice. Don’t use it for frying, as it’s not heat-resistant; just add it at the end.
Variation: Use cauliflower fried rice instead!

Hibachi vegetables:

  • zucchini – You can also use other varieties of zucchini.
  • onion – I used a yellow onion as they caramelize nicely and have a mild, slightly sweet taste. White or red onions would also work.
  • Creamy Mushrooms – Sometimes these are called “baby bellas” in stores. You can substitute white mushrooms or portobello mushrooms in this roast chicken recipe.
Variations: Add other veggies!

Zucchini, mushrooms, and onions are the most common hibachi vegetables, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and snow peas are also popular and easy to add.
