How payers are using predictive analytics and virtual care to improve care delivery

Payers are increasingly leveraging partnerships to develop AI models aimed at improving early intervention for high-risk patients. Health insurers are also interested in partnering with providers to expand virtual care, providing not only more flexibility for members, but a more efficient platform for triaging patients when they need care.

As part of the Microsoft Envision US Healthcare Summit, Microsoft interviewed executives from Aetna CVS Health and Humana to highlight some of the ways these companies are adapting to the consumerization of healthcare and the use of medical technology to improve patient outcomes.

In a fireside chat with Microsoft Global Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Rhew, Aetna CVS Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kyu Rhee noted that the company has 35 million online members and is able to provide many forms of healthcare from a distance. Patient monitoring, enabling a patient-centered approach to behavioral health and virtual-priority care.

In a panel discussion on using AI-based predictive models to accelerate care, Humana executives Dr. Mona Siddiqui, SVP, Enterprise Clinical Strategy and Quality, and Slawek Kierner, SVP, Enterprise Data and Analytics, talked about how they address implementation challenges such as false positive.

Siddiqui also noted that the development of health technology helped Humana grow into a company.

“Humana is transforming from an insurance company to a healthcare company. That means focusing on proactive care by identifying the right patient for the right type of intervention at the right time.”
