Spaghetti squash is a delicious, nutritious, gluten-free and low-carbohydrate alternative to pasta or rice noodles.It can replace almost any noodles, from classic “spaghetti” and meatballs to Baked Italian “pasta” Dishes, even as Pad Thai. However, if you don’t know how to cook it, it can be scary!

If cooking spaghetti squash scares you, then you are not alone. But believe it or not, it’s actually very easy to make. I have compiled the instructions for making grilled spaghetti squash or instant spaghetti squash.
Both methods are excellent Simple, super easy, pretty let go, and produce a delicious low-carb pasta substitute!

Safe knife skills so you can learn how to cut spaghetti squash

  • Pasta squash: I use a 3-4 pound spaghetti squash. If you use anything larger or smaller, the cooking time will be affected.
  • Oil: If you bake in the oven, you only need oil.
  • Salt and pepper: A simple combination of seasonings can make delicious and versatile pumpkin noodles.

How to cut spaghetti squash (Safley)

The walls of spaghetti squash are very thick, so it may be difficult to cut. The best answer to safely cutting spaghetti squash is to use a sharp knife and a flat surface to cut it. As long as you do it safely and proceed with caution, you will be fine! Just follow a few simple steps:

  1. Place the pumpkin horizontally on the cutting board.
  2. Use a large, sharp chef’s knife to cut off each end.
  3. Flip the pumpkin so that it stands upright, with the widest end on the cutting board.
  4. Hold the spaghetti pumpkin with one hand, press the knife into the pumpkin with the other hand, and then use your weight to pry the knife through the pumpkin.
  5. Once the knife is at least an inch inside the pumpkin, use the other hand to push the knife down until it completely cuts through the pumpkin. Cut the center and divide it in half lengthwise.
  6. After the pumpkin is cut, use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and it is ready to cook!

Let’s break it down further, we have two main ways to cut spaghetti squash:

  1. Cross in the middle: This is our preferred method. This method is easier because there are fewer pumpkins to cut and you don’t have to be close to the stem. This causes the noodles to be very long.
  2. Vertical: This method is more difficult to cut pumpkin, resulting in shorter noodles. Don’t try to cut hard stems. Once you cut to that, take the knife out and use your hands to divide the spaghetti squash in half.

Still afraid of cutting spaghetti squash?

You can cook the whole pumpkin and cut it after it is cooked. It is obviously easier to cut when it becomes soft, but we don’t like this method (see below for the reasons).

Can you cook whole spaghetti squash?

In theory, yes. However, this is not my preferred method. When the seeds become soft, it is much more difficult to dig out the seeds because you cannot easily distinguish between inedible seeds and edible pumpkin shreds.

If you are really scared by cutting the pumpkin, it is indeed easier to cut it by cooking it whole. If you are willing to sift out the seeds after they are cooked to avoid cutting it, please feel free to go this way.

Cooking methods

After cutting the spaghetti squash, you can start the easy part! Cook! I like to bake spaghetti squash in the oven, but I also include the Instant Pot method. The taste is slightly different, and the cooking time varies more, but both methods are known to be useful!

Oven baked spaghetti squash

It takes longer to bake spaghetti squash in the oven, but the result is tender caramelized squash noodles. If you have time, I strongly recommend you to do this!

  • Prepare: Follow the instructions to cut the spaghetti squash and scoop out the seeds. Brush it with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • bake: Place the pumpkin face down on a baking sheet lined with foil and bake at 400ºF for 45-50 minutes.
  • Serve: Once it is cool enough, turn the squash over and scrape off the pasta with a fork.

Instant Pasta Pumpkin

Steaming spaghetti squash in the Instant Pot is by far the fastest method, so great when you are in a hurry! Since no caramelization occurs, the depth of flavor of the pumpkin noodles is small. But don’t worry. They still taste delicious!

  • Prepare: Follow the instructions to cut the pumpkin and dig out the seeds. Sprinkle with salt.
  • Cook: Add 1 cup of water to the Instant Pot, stack the pumpkin with the cut edge facing up, then close the lid and cook for 10 minutes by hand.
  • Serve: Use two forks to chop the spaghetti squash and serve as needed.

How long does it take to cook spaghetti squash

First of all, it depends on how You are cooking. It also depends on the size of the spaghetti squash you use!

For 3-4 pounds of spaghetti squash, it takes 45-50 minutes in the oven and 10 minutes in the Instant Pot. If the pumpkin is of a different size, you may need to adjust the cooking time-especially the Instant Pot.

I always like to check squash to make sure I don’t have ExceedCook it. When cooked, the pumpkin noodles will be tender but not mushy!

Have you eaten the skin of spaghetti pumpkin?

No! of course not. Although certain types of squash have edible skins, spaghetti squash is not one of them. To serve pumpkin, you will scoop out the “noodles” and discard the skins.

Ways to use spaghetti squash

Treat spaghetti pumpkin noodles like spaghetti! You can eat pumpkin pasta alone, drizzle it with a little oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and Parmesan cheese, or add it to other recipes.

How to store

The cooked spaghetti squash will be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat, Heat it in the microwave or in a frying pan on the stove with olive oil or a sauce of your choice.

I do not recommend freezing spaghetti squash because the texture will be affected.

Instant Pot Spaghetti Pumpkin Cooked and Ready to Eat

Cooked spaghetti squash is a nutritious, gluten-free, low-carbohydrate alternative to pasta or rice noodles. Here are two foolproof ways to cook spaghetti squash in the oven or instant pot.

For the oven:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF and line a baking sheet with foil
  2. Cut the spaghetti squash vertically (short “noodles”) or horizontally (long “noodles”), and scoop out the seeds.
  3. Dig out the seeds and discard.
  4. Oil the inside and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  5. Place face down on a baking sheet and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until you can pierce it with a fork.
  6. When it is cool enough to handle, scrape out the “spaghetti” with a fork.
  7. The cooked spaghetti squash will keep in the refrigerator for 5 days.

For the Instant Pot:

  1. Cut the spaghetti squash vertically (short “noodles”) or horizontally (long “noodles”), and scoop out the seeds. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt.
  2. Add 1 cup of water to the Instant Pot.
  3. Fold the spaghetti squash together (cut side up).
  4. Close the lid and make sure that the knob has been turned to the sealed position.
  5. Set to manual high pressure for 10 minutes (larger squash will take longer)
  6. When the timer is off, open the vent on the top of the lid to release steam.
  7. Once the exhaust knob has fallen off, open the lid and chop the pumpkin with two forks to turn the pumpkin into spaghetti-like noodles!
  8. The cooked spaghetti squash will keep in the refrigerator for 5 days.

If your spaghetti squash is a different size, you may need to adjust the cooking time, especially the Instant Pot.
