How to do a car safety check before a long trip

*This is a collaborative post.

If you're going on a long trip with your family, you should make sure your car is in good condition before setting off. You should walk around the vehicle with a flashlight so you can see all the dark nooks and crannies and visually inspect everything you can see, such as the engine, tires, license plate, mirrors, and windshield wipers. If you have any questions, stop by your local garage and voice your concerns promptly before setting off.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when you inspect your car.

MOT MVP

The MOT test was introduced in 1960, and the first test only checked three items: steering, brakes and lights. These three items remain a staple of the MOT test because without them you won't be able to see where you're going (or be seen), stop or slow down safely, or control your car properly.

  • steering – Your steering should feel responsive and respond quickly to your touch. If the steering is slow or there is too much play in the steering wheel, it could be a sign of a serious problem.
  • brakes – Both the service brake (regular brake) and the hand brake (also called the emergency brake or parking brake) respond immediately to your touch, and you should be able to stop suddenly in an emergency and slowly and gently on normal roads situation. If it takes longer than you want to slow down or stop, it's best to get it checked immediately.
  • lamp – Your lights can provide guidance for you and other road users. They give you directions, warn others of your presence, and warn you on the dashboard about problems with your car. Pay attention to your lighting and make sure the bulbs are securely mounted and fit for purpose.

tire care

Along with the MVP come the tires, which are the car's only point of contact with the road. Your tires should have good tread depth, be properly inflated, and be the right size and model for your car. If your tires become unreliable over time, you can replace them effortlessly. Regular maintenance and inspections can help you determine when replacement is needed, preventing potential problems from occurring. If you need to replace your tires, it's important to choose the right products and services to ensure your safety and comfort on the road. You can purchase your Tires in Castleford or nearby areas on the Reg Greenwood website Set off with peace of mind.

fluid

Finally, make sure your car's fluids are topped up and in good condition. These fluids include everything from fuel (diesel or gasoline) to radiator water, but also brake fluid, engine oil, screen cleaner, and even coolant (if your car uses coolant).

In addition to the above, make sure your car is in good overall condition and give it a good cleaning before traveling. Removing unnecessary clutter will not only reduce the weight your car has to bear, but it will also give you and your kids more room to stretch out.
