What is compound butter?
Compound butter is a mixture of butter and other ingredients, most commonly garlic, herbs and spices, used in meat, vegetables and even bread.

- Unsalted butter – I prefer to use unsalted butter so that I can control the amount of salt and use higher quality sea salt, but you can also use salted butter and omit the added salt.
- garlic – I recommend using fresh garlic cloves so you can press them out with a garlic press. But if you have canned minced garlic on hand, you can also use it. One clove is about 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic.
- Fresh herbs – I used dill and parsley, but depending on the time of year, you can replace them with rosemary and thyme. Garlic herb butter is usually not as good as using dried herbs, but if you insist on using them, it is converted to 1 teaspoon of dried herbs instead of each tablespoon of fresh herbs.

- Press garlic. Peel the garlic cloves, then press Garlic press.
- Mash the butter. In a small bowl, mash the butter with a fork.


- Add seasonings. Mash the garlic, fresh herbs, and salt into butter until combined.


- Refrigerate (optional). If you want to cut it into thin slices, put the vanilla compound butter on a piece of plastic wrap and roll it into a log shape. Refrigerate until firm. If you just want to cover it on something, you can skip this step.
