How to Make Poached Eggs

This poached eggs recipe is really easy and only takes a few minutes!

  1. Combine water and vinegar: In a pot, bring water to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of vinegar.
  2. Add eggs and cook: Crack an egg in a small dish and stir the water with a spoon until a swirl effect occurs. Gently slide the egg into the center of the swirl and cook for 3-6 minutes, depending on your preference.
  3. Delete and service: Use a slotted spoon to remove the eggs from the water, place them on a plate, and repeat adding eggs as needed.

how long to boil an egg

You can cook eggs anywhere from 3-6 minutes. Cooking closer to 3 minutes will make the yolk thinner, and cooking closer to 6 minutes will make the yolk firmer.

Only cook to your liking!

Do you need vinegar to boil eggs?

Not theoretically possible, but I recommend it! The acidity in the vinegar helps the egg whites set faster so they are less likely to thin when they come into contact with water.

If you don’t have vinegar, you can also try a little lemon juice for the same effect.

Tips and Precautions

  • Use fresh eggs. Fresh eggs have harder whites, so they hold their shape more easily.
  • Bring the water to a boil. If the temperature is not right, the eggs will not coagulate properly.
  • Stir the water. Make sure to swirl the water like a tornado before putting in the eggs.
  • Cook them one at a time. I know. This might feel a little tedious if you’re cooking for several people, but it does yield the best results.

How to Store Poached Eggs

Poached eggs are best eaten right away, but if you have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

To reheat, bring a pot of water to a boil, remove it from the heat, and gently drop the eggs into the water. Let them reheat for another minute, then serve!
