Key takeaways:
Why do some people attract rooms while others struggle to manage small meetings? What makes some ideas go viral, while other good ones are shelved? If you’ve ever been interrupted in a meeting, ignored a career opportunity, or ignored your ideas, your cues may be the problem — and the solution.
In this episode, I interview best-selling author and lead researcher in Human Sciences, Vanessa Van Edwards, about how to communicate power, trust, leadership, likability, and charisma in your interactions with people. We talk about her new book, Clues: Mastering the Secret Language of Charismatic Communication.
My question to Vanessa Van Edwards:
- [1:28] How many photos are needed to get the perfect look on a book cover?
- [3:02] What is a clue?
- [6:48]If we don’t realize it, how could we do it on purpose?
- [8:54] What are the 3 or 4 negative cues people might be doing?
- [12:43] Do people send false social cues, and if so, what does that look like?
- [15:27] Can you talk about receiving prompts?
- [17:09] Many of us have experienced an interaction that makes us feel distrustful of someone – would you say they’re sending all these cues and we’re subconsciously accepting them?
- [19:02] What does the virtual demo do for presenting and reading prompts?
- [21:49] How does charisma manifest in all of this?
- [23:05] I had Stephen Covey on a show a few years ago. Of course, everyone knows the seven habits of highly effective people. He wrote a follow-up book called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families. In the interview, he wished he hadn’t written the letter because he can’t make public appearances with the kids right now because he’s being judged. Are you starting to feel like you have a cue target in you?
- [24:46] Where would you invite people to follow you and learn about some of the other things you’re doing?
- [25:22] I noticed you’ve been using a photo lately and it looks like your hands are pushing your hair back. Is this an intentional implication?
