How to Prepare for Your First Burning Man Experience

Every year, 70,000 people travel to Black Rock to experience Burning Man. It’s a wild adventure full of dusty sunrises and sunsets, beach hugs and great experiences. It’s hard to explain what happened during the dusty days of the dream, because everyone’s experience is different.

Wondering what to bring to the Burning Man?

Burning Man is not a place where you can just show up and show it off. You need to be ready to live in the desert for a week. The days can be muggy and the nights can get cold quickly. Sandstorms are common, so you don’t want to go anywhere without goggles, water, and a mask to protect your face from beach dust.

Burning Man is not a barter system; someone might give you a gift. You may have heard people say “playa offers”. Once you get there, you’ll understand what that means.

For the ultimate Burning Man experience, you need to plan.

places to stay in Reno

Whether you’re flying or driving, you have the opportunity to make a pit stop in Reno.i have been living Grand Sierra Resort in reno Several times before and after the burn. If you plan to stay in Reno, book your room early. The room sells fast.

My Burning Man Experience

I had my first burn in 2017, meeting the people in my RV the night before in San Francisco. I connected with this group through a mutual friend who is now my closest friend. I’ll never forget showing up on the beach after dark and being blown away by the vibrant scene.

That week I met the most amazing group of people, danced to the point where I couldn’t feel my feet, biked for miles, photographed spectacular artwork, and watched the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

I’ve been to Burning Man three times, and each experience has been a new incredible adventure.

Burning Man Costume

Burning Man Fashion: Clothing, Clothing, Shoes + Accessories

There is no dress code for Burning Man. Wear whatever you want (or nothing.) It’s all up to you.

Here’s a packing guide to help you create your own unique Burning Man costume.

  • wig Great because they protect your hair from dust.
  • comfortable boots – Put on your shoes before you get to the beach. Comfort is key. When I’m at camp, I always bring a slide or flip flops to give my feet a break.
  • tights A swimsuit is a great base layer.
  • lamp – Even if you think you have enough, bring more. Don’t forget the extra battery.
  • goggles – I made the mistake of buying tinted goggles that were ugly at night. Stick to clear.
  • scarf These are great for covering your mouth during sandstorms. (Bring one a day.) Wear a dust mask underneath.
  • coat – You need a warm one. If you get tired of carrying it, put the bike lock through the sleeve when locking the bike.
  • sock – 2 times a day

Burning Man: Where to Sleep

You don’t have to hunt for camp, but it’s a great way to meet new people.

  • RV – They are comfortable and you will communicate! You also don’t have to worry about where to store your food or where to cook it. If you’re traveling in an RV, bring cash to dump the grey water and top up the tank.
  • yurt – I lived in a yurt for a year and it was amazing. It can be a little dark in there, but ours was always comfortable when the A/C was on.
  • tent – Bring everything you need including tent shades, tent stakes, sleeping pads, sleeping bags and camping essentials.
Tips for Beginners to Burning Man

What to do before arriving at Black Rock City

1) Get organized.

  • Schedule breaks and give yourself a few days to recover at the end of the week.
  • Create a budget, buy tickets, and find a camp.
  • Decide where you’re going to sleep and how you’re going to get there.
  • If you decide to book an RV, do so as early as possible.
  • Stretch out and get ready to move because you’ll be riding a bike a lot.

2) Complete your shopping early.

you can buy your bike and other essentials in Reno. But it will be busy!

If you don’t want to wait in line, buy as much as you can before you get to Reno.

3) Be prepared to wait.

I waited 10 to 13 hours for Burning Man. Remember, there are thousands of people arriving at the same time as you. If it’s too dusty to drive, they may stop letting people in until things improve.

after burn

Burning Man is a no-trace event, so you have to pack everything you bring, including all your trash.

If you’re in an RV, you can dump all your black water in Reno.

clean your gear

Everything gets dusty. While the last thing you probably want to do is clean all your beach gear when you get home, it’s best to get the dust off before you forget. Store your stuff in plastic containers for next year.

in conclusion

Everyone’s time at Blackrock is unique, the imagination is limitless, and the possibilities are limitless. This is a temporary city built every year to welcome burners from all over the world. At every corner, you will find something new.

Happy burning! Enjoy your unique Burning Man experience and enjoy your life!
