“On July 11, 2021, during the illegal speed activity of Barneveld & McKinnon, a passenger leaned out of Cardi and held an AK47; see the photo. SFPD transportation company personnel handled a case and confiscated this special vehicle today. Vehicles,” the police said on Twitter.
The tweet included a photo of a woman holding a weapon, and a second photo of Cadillac surrounded by police cars when it was being attached to a trailer.
According to the police department, the woman was seen during “an illegal speeding show.” California Vehicle Law 23109 defines “showing speed” as a crime related to speed racing. Such races may include street racing, drag racing, or a speed display of one or more motor vehicles on public streets, highways, or highways.
Participating in a speed race in California is usually a misdemeanor for the first offender. It is punishable by imprisonment ranging from 1 to 90 days and court fines ranging from US$355 to US$1,000.
AK-47, officially named Avtomat Kalashnikova, is an assault rifle originally developed in the Soviet Union. “47” refers to the year it was first introduced, 1947. This gun has been widely copied, and it is not clear whether the woman in the San Francisco photo is holding a genuine AK-47 or an imitation version.
The city reported an increase in shootings and attacks in the first six months of 2021. In July, Police Chief Bill Scott stated that the city had reported 119 shootings in the first half of the year, compared with 58 in the same period last year.
“We are almost twice what we have in the past two years. This is a huge problem,” Scott said at a July 12 press conference on the police department’s mid-year report.
On July 29, the Criminal Justice Commission issued a Report Crimes committed during the pandemic. The independent organization found that compared with the same period in 2020, there was a 16% increase in homicides across the country in the first half of 2021. This figure is 42% higher than the same period in 2019.
