Indian couple longing for grandson sues son, his wife

NEW DELHI (AP) — A retired Indian couple is suing their son and daughter-in-law to have a grandchild within a year or pay them 50 million rupees ($675,000).

Sanjeev Ranjan Prasad, a 61-year-old retired government official, said it was an emotional and sensitive issue for him and his wife, Sadana Prasad, and they couldn’t wait any longer. His son, a pilot, married six years ago.

“We want a grandson or granddaughter within a year or be compensated because I spend all my life’s income on my son’s education,” Prasad told reporters on May 12.

Prasad said he spent 3.5 million rupees ($47,300) for his son’s pilot training in the United States.

“The main problem is that we need a grandchild at this age, but the attitude of these people (my son and daughter-in-law) is that they will not consider us,” Prasad said.

“We got him married in the hope that we would be lucky enough to be grandparents. They’ve been married for six years,” Prasad said. “It feels as if we have everything, but we have nothing.”

Media reports said the court accepted their petition and scheduled a hearing.

The son and daughter-in-law could not be reached for comment.

Prasad said he and his wife are fond of children.

“We didn’t get the love and affection from where we wanted the most,” he said. “I feel unlucky.”
