The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Vela in a ceremony held in Mumbai on November 25. This is the fourth of six Project-75(I) (Scorpène) class diesel-electric submarines (SSK) licensed to build.

The Information and Information Bureau of the Government of India (PIB) announced in March 2021 that the successful test of the fuel cell-based air independent propulsion (AIP) prototype will provide information for the development and upgrade of the Kalvari-class SSK. The AIP system was developed by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in Ambernath in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro, Thermax, and the Advanced Computing Development Center.
The Kalveri-class SSK has a displacement of 1,775 tons underwater and has an advanced silent system designed to improve invisibility. If completed successfully, the AIP modification of these ships will significantly improve their underwater endurance.
The AIP modification will require cutting the hull of the Kalvari SSK to insert an additional 10 m section. MDL may carry out modification work during the vessel’s scheduled mid-term upgrade plan.
