Indonesians ignore warnings and are eager to buy antiparasitic drugs to treat COVID


“Maybe it’s a placebo. Maybe. But it could also be true,” he added.

Sylvie Bernadi, who lives on the outskirts of Jakarta, said that after seeing WhatsApp messages and social media posts promoting the drug, she bought ivermectin for her infected relatives.

“A lot of people say it can cure Covid-19, so I bought it,” the 66-year-old said, acknowledging that some people are concerned about unspecified side effects.

Driven by online anti-vaccine and pandemic conspiracy theories, from Brazil to South Africa to Lebanon, the demand for this drug has surged.

However, the manufacturer Merck stated that “there is no scientific basis for the potential therapeutic effect of Covid-19” and warned that if the drug is used improperly, safety issues may arise.

Scientists, the World Health Organization and several drug regulatory agencies, including Indonesia itself, have also emphasized that there is a lack of reliable evidence that it is effective against Covid-19.
