Instagram will show more of people you don’t follow

Instagram is adding two new feeds to the app and updating the existing homepage feed with more content from accounts you haven’t followed.

To offset the extra content you did not choose to watch, Instagram is restoring a chronological feed if only Contains content from the following account.

Another feed launched by Instagram is similar to Twitter’s list in that it allows you to manage the accounts whose content you want to view.

Below are more details about Instagram updates, which are said to give users more control over their experience.

Instagram homepage update

In confirming the upcoming update, the Instagram app will contain three types of feeds.

The three feeds include:

  • Family: This is the Instagram experience you know about today, where content is ranked algorithmically based on your level of interest in a particular post.
  • Favorites: This feed contains content from your account that you want to make sure you don’t miss it. You can choose which accounts to show in this feed, similar to a Twitter list.
  • The following: This is a chronological list of posts only from accounts you follow.

In a video posted by the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, the two new feeds were previewed and detailed information about the changes to the existing homepage feed was shared.

Mosseri said these changes are meant to help people feel satisfied with the time they spend on the app.

He believes that the way people customize their Instagram feeds can create a more positive experience.

At the same time, however, the main feed will stay away from the content people choose.

This was explained when Mosseri described the new “Following” feed. He said (emphasis mine):

“…The third one we call’following’-it will be a chronological list of posts, only from the accounts you follow because Over time, there will be more and more recommendations on the homepage. “

This is great news for content discovery, because it creates the potential for the account to show up in front of more people and build an audience.

However, if people suddenly find that they don’t want to see enough content when they open the Instagram app, this may lead to a worse experience.

At least they will be able to quickly switch to favorites or follow feeds from the easy-to-access drop-down menu.

As mentioned earlier, these are already available in some user tests. Mosseri said that he hopes the full experience will be launched in the first half of this year.
