Internet of Things News-COYOTE Case Study: Increase the chances of recovering a stolen vehicle within 48 hours

In France, a car is stolen every four minutes. Faced with the increasingly sophisticated methods used by thieves, vehicle security has become more and more complicated. Recovery solutions for stolen vehicles are essential. Using its autonomous and interference-free tracker, the technology can locate and retrieve stolen vehicles anywhere in Europe.

Since 2018, COYOTE has been developing Coyote Secure, a solution that relies on IoT trackers to retrieve stolen vehicles as quickly as possible.

Currently, about 3.5 million cars are stolen every year worldwide, including 700,000 in Europe. In 2020, 121,500 cars were stolen in France, an average of one car was stolen every four minutes1In France alone, the value of stolen vehicles is estimated to be approximately 1 billion euros. However, according to ICA Club data, 80% of stolen vehicles in France are equipped with anti-theft devices2.

Unfortunately, when car owners realize that their vehicle is missing, it is usually too late, because only 54% of families with stolen cars eventually find their cars, while families with two-wheelers (motorbikes/scooters) stolen This is 39%.French Ministry of the Interior3The recovery process can be very long, and the thieves have enough time to dismantle the stolen vehicles or export them to the other side of the world. It is in this situation that the Coyote Secure solution is essential.

A long-lasting, remote and cost-effective solution

In 2017, COYOTE acquired Traqueur®, the leader in tracking and post-theft recovery solutions in France at the time, and launched the Coyote Secure solution the following year, which is the most effective stolen vehicle recovery service on the market. Thanks to this service, the company was able to restore 91% of its vehicles in less than 48 hours. To ensure this success, the tracker integrates the patented Traqueur® technology, which has benefited from compatibility with the Sigfox 0G network since 2015. The tracker has autonomy and anti-interference, and is hidden in the customer’s vehicle.

One of the main advantages of trackers is that they do not need to be connected to the vehicle’s central control, which makes them more difficult to detect during theft. They rely on IoT networks instead of cellular, GPS, or Bluetooth networks. This fact also prevents the use of jammers and can track the vehicle even if it is hidden in a container, box or buried underground. When you know 43 This is crucial when% of stolen vehicles are hidden in closed or underground places. In fact, in France, between 2017 and 2020, the amount of burial of newly stolen vehicles more than doubled.

The Sigfox network provides high-quality coverage throughout France and international coverage in more than 70 countries/regions. It can send and retrieve small information packets, including areas with very weak signals, or all areas without coverage. A feature of this network is that the IoT devices running on it require very little energy, which allows the tracker to be very small and run autonomously for many years. It can also accurately calculate and monitor the battery consumption of IoT devices-this key information can reduce maintenance costs and replace devices when they may not be needed.

Today, thanks to the Internet of Things network, it supports geolocation based on network triangulation and can estimate the location of the equipped vehicle from 1 to 5 kilometers. The data and location will be regularly received from the tracker. Once a theft report occurs, it will enter the “recovery mode” “. This means that the network will estimate the location of the vehicle based on each message it receives, allowing the company to send its nearest team directly to the scene to accurately locate the vehicle in more places where “traditional” technology cannot be used. Therefore, even if the jammer tries to block the signal, COYOTE can locate the hidden area of the vehicle.

Once the position is received, a group of internal detectives will be mobilized to conduct the final stage of the search. When the vehicle is buried, these detectives can access the approximate location of the vehicle. They were deployed on the scene to find their exact location and cooperate with the police to recover the vehicle. This unique model combines technology and a 24/7 on-site team, making this French company particularly sensitive and efficient.

Since the establishment of the partnership with Sigfox, the tracking tools used by internal detectives have also evolved greatly, as they were initially very heavy and easy to find, which could put the detective at risk. Today, they benefit from miniaturized tools that provide better localization and the same level of service, while reducing operating costs by nearly two-thirds.

Quote based on strong partnership

As part of the continuous innovation process, Sigfox works closely with the R&D team and helps COYOTE become the benchmark for post-flight recovery.

In the next few years, the company aims to leverage its strategic partnership and vehicle recycling services that already account for 30% of its revenue. Combining technology and expertise will only strengthen its leadership position and continue to create more innovative and affordable solutions for the connected services and driver assistance markets.
