NEW YORK (AP) — As South Korean pop star Luna prepares to make her Broadway debut this fall in the musical “KPOP,” she’s already dreaming of who might be showing up on opening night — like BTS.
“I would appreciate it if they showed up on opening night,” Luna told The Associated Press through her interpreter.
She also wants fans and other stars to show up.
“This is New York City, and it has its own celebrities and an audience that loves it. So, I would love to see New York celebrities and Hollywood celebrities,” Luna said.
Luna was introduced at a press conference for the musical at the Korean Cultural Center in New York on March 31.
Luna’s musical career began as a member of the popular K-pop group f(x) before becoming a solo artist. Her latest single “Madonna” was released in September.
Her stage resume includes Korean productions “In the Heights” and “Mamma Mia,” and she’s excited to bring her talents to Broadway.
“I’ve loved doing all these things since I was a kid, and I even enjoyed creating routines,” Luna says.
She added: “For this musical, I can dance and sing and perform, which is so exciting and I can’t wait to do it.”
“KPOP” tells the story of the global superstar preparing for a special one-night-only concert when a singer’s inner struggle threatens to tear down one of the industry’s biggest labels.
The multimedia experience explores the relentless discipline, raw talent and business ambition behind the international phenomenon.
The musical features the story of Jason Kim and the music of Helen Park, who has been performing for the past eight years. She said she’s glad audiences can finally experience her favorite genre of music.
“I know K-pop has been really hot lately and a lot of people are into the genre. But when we started working on this musical in 2014, I was very eager to show the world what I saw. I wanted to use a Share it with the world in a language that everyone can understand,” she said.
“I think musicals are a vessel for people to listen to and witness other people’s stories and feel emotions. I really hope this show does that in a genre that I really like,” Park said.
“KPOP” kicks off October 13th at Circle at the Square Theater, with opening night scheduled for November 20th.
