Tooth Relic
My sightseeing tour in Kandy started with the iconic Temple of the Tooth Relic. This monumental Buddhist temple is engulfed in a white wall of water that stretches down to Bogambara Lake. When I was roaming around Sri Lanka, I noticed that this style of wall can be seen in many places. It cannot be denied that this mystical temple is intrinsically linked to Kandy’s vibrant cultural life. An overwhelming sense of tranquility strikes upon stepping through the front entrance.
As you prepare to step through the gates of the Kandy Royal Palace, you’ll notice locals holding white lotuses and water lilies – symbols of Buddhist enlightenment – as offerings to Buddha statues. After much anticipation and a thorough security check, you are finally blessed to enter one of the most famous Buddhist temples in the world. Here, you’ll find the relics of the Buddha perfectly preserved, along with his timeless teachings, far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
As you approach the temple’s entrance, you’ll be greeted by the majestic sight of two elephants, meticulously carved in the iconic Kandy style. The road leading to the prayer area is lined with ivory and Buddhist flags, which is very beautiful. Then, when you step inside, the mesmerizing melodies of Carnatic music fill the air and you are transported to a world of bliss and tranquility. Follow the upbeat beat of Mridangam as you explore the ground and first floors, as men in gorgeous red and white gowns play catchy beats.
The Tooth Relic has a long and fascinating history. Rumor has it that it was hidden in a millstone during the reign of King Kotte before it was moved to Kandy. Here, devout followers of Buddha built a two-story building to safely keep this rare treasure. Tourists are allowed to briefly visit the room where the teeth are stored, but photography is strictly prohibited. The tooth itself is preserved in an impressive gold stupa-shaped coffin alongside five other stupa coffins of various sizes. And that’s just the beginning – the complex includes a series of shrines, small temples and museums, all part of the main temple.
Kandy dance
As the sun begins to set, the night ends with a traditional Kandy dance unique to Kandy. This cultural display is only offered at certain times, 4-5pm or 5-6pm, so be sure to book your tickets in advance. Prepare to be dazzled by Kandy dancers in glorious red and white costumes as they bring this traditional culture to life!
