Learn about early courses

*This is a collaborative post.

In the UK, Early Years courses are now called ‘Early Foundation Stage’ or EYFS. It aims to set the standard for learning, development and care for all children from birth to age 5.

Every school and every Ofsted registered early care provider (including nurseries and nannies) must comply with the EYFS. EYFS is only implemented in England – Scotland and Wales follow different protocols.

What is taught during EYFS?

Much of the teaching in the early years is done through play and play. This is considered the most effective way to teach our youngest students. The different focus areas include –

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • math
  • know the world
  • Expressive Arts and Design

A fulfilling day filled with fun activities, games and stories, children can learn everything they need to learn from their peers. Talking to other students and their teachers is encouraged and helps and guides each child in the process. Physical challenges are presented through play and movement, and art is well represented through drawing, painting, and other forms of creativity. Day trips, performances, discussions and special events all contribute to the formation of EYFS in the classroom, and most children find their first experience at school fun, challenging and rewarding.

How is early learning assessed?

Regular assessments – again at ages 3-4 and 5. Children never realize they are being assessed. The classroom environment is designed to make young children feel safe and stress-free, so assessments are made by observation only.

Parents should feel they can make an appointment with their child’s teacher to discuss concerns or concerns they or their child may have. If you find that your child is having trouble settling in school, consider volunteering to help during a classroom or school trip. This can help your child feel at home in their new environment.
