Leslie Jordan talks about growing up as gay in a religious family


In a new interview, Leslie Jordan talked publicly about his relationship with the church and what it was like to be gay growing up in a religious family.

Jordan recently released his album “Company’s Comin'”, and Shania Twain linked their religious upbringing together in the latest episode of her Apple Music Hits show.,” is celebrating the first anniversary of its founding.

In their conversation, Twain said that music is her “savior” and a “safe zone” where she is “unjudged”. She shared, “Growing up in a family that believes that God will help you out there and have music” is an “inspiring way of growing up.”

When discussing his album”Company Profile‘”-which includes several gospel songs and country songs-Jordan said these are the types of music he grew up and related to.

“I don’t have an ax to grind. In the past, I would say,’Oh, well, Baptist Church, they did this to me, they did that to me.’ It’s not true,” he said. “That’s not true. Do you know what I mean?”

Jordan recalled that Parton suggested that they show some of her family members on their tracks. “When you heard the final choir, it was Dolly Parton’s family…oh my goodness, it’s really important,” he shared.

In a conversation with Twain, the “Call Me Kat” star recounted how he grew up turning to comedy to “stop bullies.” When they started bullying him, he would use them as his “defense mechanism” to make them laugh.

Jordan still remembers the moment he told his parents that he no longer wanted to go to Sunday school because other children would laugh at him.

He said that his father knelt on one knee and told him that there is a difference between those who laugh at him and those who laugh with him. It was during this time that his father helped him realize that he had the “talent” to make people laugh.

“So, I think I’ve been thinking about that all these years… what a gift,” Jordan continued. “Being able to make people laugh and have this talent, because you can tell a joke, and other people can tell the same joke, if they have no rhythm, then no matter what rhythm the comedian has, this is a talent. .. It’s like music. We hear music. It’s rhythm.”
