Evidence of French colonial rule can be found all over Vietnam, especially when it comes to cuisine.

Coffee, butter, roasts and beef are all French heritage, even though the coffee is sweetened with condensed milk and the beef is sautéed with soy sauce and fish sauce.

Baguettes are also available everywhere, although they are crispier and lighter than French breads — and more likely to be stuffed with the contrast of Vietnamese flavors. The result is the iconic banh mi sandwich, which combines savory, sweet, spicy and herbal flavors with a crunchy and chewy texture.
