A mother and grandmother were arrested and are now facing charges related to the death of a baby from an opioid overdose.
Joyce Stover, 33, and Sharon Elaine Jordan, 55, of South Carolina, were investigating Stover’s 11-month-old daughter on October 30. After his death, he was detained by the police. police I was first called to Stover’s house that day because there were reports that the baby did not respond.
According to an accident report obtained by the Greenville News Channel, investigators at the scene found several bottles of naloxone in the child’s crib. WYFFLater that day, the Chester County Coroner announced the death of the child whose name had not been released to the public. A toxicology report stated that the cause of her death was an overdose of fentanyl.
Naloxone is an opioid antagonist used to quickly reverse the effects of overdose. Due to efforts to resuscitate the baby, it is not clear whether there is a bottle in the crib.

The police investigation found that Jordan was the legal guardian of the baby, and Stover had been visiting her daughter on the day the baby died.

When Jordan returned about 30 minutes later, she found Stover was asleep near the kitchen sink and the child was sitting on the floor nearby.
“What are you doing?” Jordan reportedly said after her return. “The baby should go to bed.”
The grandmother then carried the baby to her crib and lay down. She said that her granddaughter was behaving normally at the time. After checking in about 20 minutes, the child looks fine. However, 30 minutes later, she heard Stover’s screams and found that the child was unresponsive.
Jordan was charged with illegally neglecting children, and Stover was charged with child abuse and murder. While awaiting the bail hearing, both were detained at the Chester County Detention Center.
“These people have families,” Grant Suskin, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said in a statement. “They have children of this age or have been at that age. So it is very difficult for them… which makes exposing such a young person to such dangerous drugs even more destructive.”
