- lemon: Give the shrimp a delicious bright sour taste!
- Oil or butter: Both can be used to fry shrimp, but I like to use butter.
PS You can also put fresh garlic in this dish, or use our mixed seasoning to keep it simple!

What shrimp to buy
I always have a bag of frozen shrimp on hand. A super simple dinner can be enjoyed any night of the week! You can use fresh or Frozen shrimp, guts, thinned and cleaned. If you want to clean and prepare your own shrimp, that’s totally fine, but I like to minimize my preparation work, especially in this simple shrimp recipe.
I also prefer to buy wild-caught, MSC-certified shrimp, because it is the most sustainable choice for farming shrimp, but please use the method that suits you best!
Different shrimp sizes:
As for the size, you can use any size shrimp you own or like, but please be careful to slightly adjust the cooking time as needed! The prawns take about 2 minutes per side, and for extra-large prawns or giant prawns, you need an extra minute.
Shrimp tail…is it or isn’t it?
It all depends on you. For this dish, I do it for convenience, no tail! Now in some dishes, retaining the tail helps to enhance the flavor. In this dish, you can choose whatever you want, and there is no difference. Please remember to remove the tail before serving, because in my opinion, serving shrimp and tail together is really the worst!

How to fry shrimp
- Season the shrimp: Pat the dried shrimp lightly with a paper towel to remove excess water. Put it in a bowl, then add all the seasonings and 1 tablespoon of oil.
- Cooking, decoration and service: Heat additional oil in a saucepan over medium heat, then add shrimp. Use tongs (if using smaller shrimp, use a spatula) and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, then squeeze the lemon juice on the shrimp and gently stir to combine.
How do you know when the shrimp is cooked?
There are several key ways to tell if your shrimp is cooked:
- color: Fully cooked shrimp will change from gray to opaque pinkish white.
- shape: The fully cooked shrimp will roll into a loose C shape.
Remember, shrimp cooks very quickly. You have to pay close attention to it so that it does not overcook. To avoid overcooking the shrimp, when the shrimp meat is opaque and pink, immediately remove the shrimp from the frying pan without leaving any gray parts.
Can frozen shrimp be fried?
If you are eating frozen shrimp instead of fresh shrimp, I suggest you defrost it before cooking for best results.
How to defrost shrimp
- Know you are going to make this shrimp recipe? Remove the shrimp the day before: Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
- Didn’t get it out of the refrigerator in time? no problem! Thaw the shrimp on the following dates: Use this simple method to quickly thaw frozen shrimp:
- Put the frozen shrimp in a large bowl of cold water.
- Let the shrimp sit for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to separate any pieces that have frozen together.
- Pat dry and follow the instructions to continue.

Tip
- Completely dry. Make sure to pat the shrimp thoroughly dry before cooking. You want it to become brittle on the outside. If there is too much moisture, it will be steamed instead of fried.
- Don’t overcrowd your pot. If needed, you can cook in batches!
- Don’t overcook it. Remember, shrimp cooks very quickly (usually only 1-2 minutes per side, depending on the size of the shrimp), cooked shrimp will exhibit an unpleasant rubbery texture, so watch carefully!
Let’s cook a meal!
