It’s best to bake sweet potatoes at a relatively high temperature, 400 or 425 degrees Fahrenheit. I prefer 425F because they cook slightly faster and have a crispier skin.
How Long to Roast Sweet Potatoes?
Most baked sweet potato recipes call for 40-50 minutes in the oven for medium sweet potatoes and 50-60 minutes for large sweet potatoes. Keep in mind that roasting times for sweet potatoes will vary depending on their size.
Tip: Use a fork to test for doneness.
When a fork is inserted into the thickest part of the potato, they go in easily with no resistance and they are ready.

- change seasoning – Instead of regular salt and pepper, add a bolder flavor Taco Seasoning, ranch seasoningcinnamon or Pumpkin Pie Spiceor a scoop compound butter (after cooking).
- try other sweet potatoes – I used orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, but white or purple varieties would also work with this method. Yams too!
- season with other oils – Use another cooking oil to change the taste, eg unrefined coconut oil (or Buttery Coconut Oil), leftover bacon grease, or butter.
- add more toppings – In addition to the above ingredients, try sour cream, a little blue cheese, chopped nuts, chives, a little maple syrup (or Sugar-Free Maple Syrup).
